One stay-at-home mom took to TikTok to explain why she will never put her own kid in daycare.

@olddavenportfam the first video on this topic over the summer, saying that her decision not to put her daughter in daycare has to do with her own experiences working in the childcare industry.
“You are not allowed to tickle or give much affection (as in hugs),” she wrote. “It’s ‘abuse.’”
She also alleged that daycare centers feed kids “crap food” and are too strict about what children can do while under their care, ultimately limiting playtime or, letting them “be kids.”

A follow-up video included further allegations, including that background checks on daycare employees are no longer a requirement in Washington state, kids have to nap on the center’s schedule rather than the parents’ preferred schedule, and the teacher to child ratio isn’t always great.
The TikToks brought out some strong reactions from parents, some in agreement with @olddavenportfam’s perspective and others feeling like she’s being a little too harsh.
“It’s hard to find a good daycare,” wrote @savannahhannon99. “I’ve worked at many that broke the law! I don’t want my future kid in a center.”
“Never had a daycare not require background checks and no they can’t follow your schedule because there would be too many different schedules to follow,” @singlemomma82 reasoned.
Making the decision to put a child in daycare can be tough for any parent, but it’s often unavoidable. With the cost of living constantly rising faster than wages in the United States, many families have two working parents — or a single-parent household where the adult obviously has to work — and limited options when it comes to who can look after their child.
And @olddavenportfam says her own personal decision isn’t a reflection on how she feels about people who are in that tough position.
“Some kids thrive in childcare,” she wrote on a later video. “Some kids struggle. I’ve seen it all. If you have no choice, there’s nothing wrong with that.”
The TikToker shared that while she used to be passionate about childcare herself, multiple bad experiences in the industry left her with such a bad taste in her mouth that it reshaped her views entirely.

The childcare system in the United States certainly has plenty of flaws, which is why it’s been receiving so much national attention lately, but it’s also worth noting that this particular stay at home mom also doesn’t appear to believe in vaccines, which may be playing a role in her decision as well.
All the same, she does have some valid critiques, and her encouragement towards parents who use daycare centers to research them thoroughly is good advice.
