Halloween is a time that should be adventurous and fun for everyone, but one mom says her kid was feeling pretty deflated after getting picked on for a costume he had been so excited about.

Jill Stahl Struckman shared photos of her son, Evan, before he left for school on the day of his class’s Halloween party.

“He only answers to ‘Tony’ or ‘Mr. Stark,’” she wrote. “He wanted [me] to drive him to school but only in the Mercedes. Since I couldn’t drive him this very minute, Tony had to be a bus rider.”

The young kid put on a great show of both looking and posing like a miniature Tony Stark, Iron Man’s secret identity in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as played by Robert Downey Jr. But while Evan may have been thrilled about his costume, that excitement turned to something else not long after he got on the bus.

According to Struckman, some kids “told him he looked stupid,” and upset him enough that he washed off his face and called his mom to come pick him up as soon as he got to school.

“Kids need to understand that WORDS hurt,” she wrote.

Fortunately, after talking through things, Evan decided he wanted to freshen up his Tony Stark look and head back to school so he wouldn’t miss the Halloween party.

“Yesterday Ev learned a lot… some real-life lessons,” the proud mom later posted. “1. He never wants to make someone feel the way he did (so he knows he should choose his words wisely). 2. Not to let other people’s opinions weigh so heavily on him!!”

The mom and son also received an overwhelming show of support on social media, ranging from kind words, to videos from adults also dressed up like Tony Stark, to physical mail offering up notes of encouragement.

“This boy has swagger and usually doesn’t let things that people say get to him!!” Struckman wrote.

She also explained that she doesn’t think the kids who bullied him are bad kids, and hope they learned something from all of this as well: “I think one kid said something mean and that others got caught up in it and it snowballed from there. It’s another important conversation we should all be having with our kids — DON’T just go along with something you know is not right.”
