Yet another Republican running for office has made atrocious comments about rape, and politicians on both sides of the aisle have condemned it. But are we still pretending to be surprised?

Robert Regan, a GOP candidate for Michigan’s District 74 state legislature, stirred up controversy during a recent livestream hosted by the Trump-supporting Rescue Michigan Coalition.
The group was discussing whether or not the 2020 election results could still be challenged (yes, apparently that’s still a conversation we’re having), with fellow panelist Amber Harris saying it’s time to move on.
Regan then attempting to draw a baffling and downright horrifying comparison, saying, “I tell my daughter, ‘Well, if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it.’”

Comparing accepting the results of a fair election just because you don’t like the person who won to rape in and of itself would be despicable. Making that comparison while saying “like back and enjoy it” is even worse. And kicking the whole thing off by suggesting this is something Regan tells his daughters explains why people like this have earned it every time they are referred to as deplorable.
Michigan Republicans have denounced Regan’s comments, albeit in the predictable, meaningless ways.
Senator Mark Huizenga condemned the remarks “as a father of two daughters,” while party chairman Ron Weiser referred to Regan’s “history of foolish” comments and claimed to expect better. The other co-chair, Meshawn Maddock, said he would “like to think [Regan] didn’t mean what he said” and expressed a desire to control what candidates say out loud.
This creep is ROBERT REGAN!
You know, the guy running for Michigan House who told his daughters if raped lie back and enjoy!
Oh! And he also supports Putin’s invasion of Ukraine

None of them floated the idea of Regan withdrawing from the race, even as he makes other comments in support of Vladimir Putin and his past antisemitic and misogynistic comments have repeatedly laid the groundwork for him to say more things like this without consequences from his would-be peers.
Wow. Robert Regan (@Regan4Michigan) managed to be anti-semitic and a misogynist in one post. How is this ok? pic.twitter.com/vyLf6C62GZ

Perhaps most notable in Regan’s history is the fact that his own daughter begged people not to vote for him back in 2020. And if these are the kinds of things he has said to his children to guide them in growing up, it’s no surprise they don’t find him fit to lead anyone at all.
