Marta Smekhova was volunteering at the Kyiv shelter when she met Amelia, who confided in her that it was her dream to sing in front of a crowd of people on stage one day.

In a Facebook post, Smekhova says she encouraged Amelia that there’s no time like the present, with a built-in audience surrounding them in the shelter. The video shows the young girl standing on something so she’s elevated above the others crowding into the small shelter, with no one really paying attention to her at first.

But as she begins to sing, everyone goes silent, directing all their attention towards her.

It’s a devastating reminder that all the Ukrainians being forced to shelter or flee from their homes in light of Russia’s invasion were just going about their lives as normal not long ago, watching Disney movies with their children or dreaming of the future.

The video unsurprisingly struck a chord as it started making the rounds online.

According to a translation of the original Facebook post, Smekhova took the opportunity to urge Russia to consider the civilian toll this war is already taking.

“Look, Russians, against whom you are fighting!” she wrote. “Only a coward can fight against civilians, take away childhood from defenseless children! You let your children go into the stew, making them into cannon meat… and our children radiate light, and even in a raw dark basement it does not blink, but ignites even brighter!”
