Asking for time off from work can be an oddly unpleasant experience, even though in a normal world, work shouldn’t be the driving force of our entire lives. But bosses have a tendency to make things difficult, sometimes no matter what you do to try to make things easier for them.

A redditor posting to r/antiwork recently shared their experience getting denied vacation time — and how they came out on top, in the end.
u/ImplyingVolatility wrote that they had a “major vacation planned for many months,” and notified their boss well in advance that they would need some time off. He assured them that would be fine, and the employee went ahead and made all their travel plans.

Despite reminding their boss about the upcoming trip several times as the date drew nearer, the OP said when their trip was a week away, things changed.
“My boss suddenly acted like this was completely out of the blue,” they wrote. “He said I didn’t request the time off in the ‘proper channels’ and there was no way I could get the time off. There was nothing he could do, I simply had to come in.”
After getting over the shock, the redditor decided to call their boss back up and let him know that the trip was fully paid for and really important, so they would be quitting their job and only giving one week’s notice.
“He started to both get angry and to sound a bit panicked, which was strange,” they said. “He asked if I would stay if I got my time off, and I said of course. He said he would see what he could do and ended the call. He called me back 10 minutes later and said it was all taken care of, and I could go on my trip.”
The redditor highlighted what more employees need to internalize, which is that companies can’t function without good workers, and that leaves folks with “more leverage than they want you to think you have.”
Everyone reading the thread was incredibly supportive of the employee for sticking to their guns in this scenario, and offered some additional advice as well.
