A homeowner took to Reddit and Imgur to show how their household responded when their neighborhood HOA didn’t let them fly a rainbow Pride flag.

The post on Reddit, mischievously titled, “HOA won’t let us fly our modest Pride flag, so we just follow the rules,” details the skirmish the family had with the HOA. It was shared to the MaliciousCompliance subreddit, dedicated to, “People conforming to the letter, but not the spirit, of a request,” and was also cross-posted to another subreddit devoted to people’s battles with their HOAs.

“Due to some neighbors flying BLM flags, Thin blue line flags, and other opinion flags, our HOA decided last month that we’re only allowed to fly the USA flag, and nothing else,” Redditor u/memon17 conveyed. “The day after the decision, we receive an email that someone reported our Pride flag (that we had in our house since 2016) and that we needed to take it down. We complied and removed the flag.”
So, that’s where the compliance came in. Now, here’s where the malicious came in.
“Looking through our new rules, we noticed that removable lights are permitted without restriction, so … we bought 6 colored floodlights, and we washed our house in pride colors. A little less subtle than our simple flag. A lot more fun for anyone complaining about the flag itself and what it represents.”
They also posted an Imgur photo of the house, which looks fabulous in Pride colors.
Many on both platforms agreed. On Imgur, one commenter posted a gif of “gay,” “more gay,” and “all the gay” buttons being mashed; another opted for a gif that declared, “Gay as a diamond-studded rainbow.” Someone else posted a photo of the White House similarly adorned in Pride lights (which was an Obama Administration gesture, as if you couldn’t guess), and another just asked, referring to rainbow legends, “Where’s the pot of gold?”

On the Reddit anti-HOA subreddit, people had other amusing suggestions for how to display Pride without violating the HOA rules. “Are the lawn gnomes allowed to have flags? Seems an easy way to get around it and still have A flag, in addition to everything else,” one suggested.
Another added, with brevity, “Rainbow curtains too.”
