Brendan Khuri is the 17-year-old son of multi-millionaire and real estate mogul James Khuri. On February 17th, while racing his Lamborghini Urus SUV with his girlfriend and traveling at 100 mph, he killed a woman named Monique Munoz. The Daily News reports that he was sentenced to seven to nine months at a juvenile detention center. Munoz’s family and friends are outraged by the leniency of his punishment.

Khuri has been serving his time since April, when he plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, but his lawyers have been arguing that he should serve the majority of his sentence on probation at his family’s Los Angeles mansion. They have argued the teen has depression, is autistic, and suffers from ADHD, exacerbated by brain injuries sustained during his crash with Munoz, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Munoz family thinks this is absurd.

“House arrest in a mansion is not punishment,” Cynthia Crespin, Munoz’s cousin, said in court. “He took an innocent life in a careless and senseless way.”
During a demonstration in August, Munoz’s uncle, Richard Cartier, told reporters he was protesting house arrest for Brendan.
“I’m looking for this kid to actually get what he deserves,” Cartier told ABC 7. “He murdered my niece and he had no remorse for any life of any kind and he showed it.”
The crash was not the first time Brendan was cited for his driving. He was cited twice for excessive speeding and had his license briefly suspended for the way he was driving his Lamborghini, Los Angeles police testified. He often posted on social media about his hobby of speed racing and drifting.
