It’s no secret that working conditions in the United States are less than ideal for a whole lot of people, but since it’s all most of us have ever known, it can be easy to lose sight of just how awful it really is.

A Swedish Redditor posted to the antiwork subreddit to genuinely ask American workers why they don’t riot over the state of things, both reminding everyone how bad it is and prompting dismally practical answers to the question itself.

“I know people seem to look up to [Sweden] regarding our working conditions, five weeks paid vacation and paid maternity/paternity leave, but honestly it SUCKS here,” u/letsdropacid wrote. “So whenever I read about what it’s like to work in America I can’t think of anything else but slavery.”

The Redditor went on to tell an anecdote about getting questioned for calling out sick at a short-lived stint working for Starbucks, noting that “it was insane” and “must be ‘an American thing,’” and ultimately prompted them to quit the job.

“Like I said, things in Sweden are from as perfect as people make them out to be, but compared to America it’s HEAVEN. You guys are treated as slaves,” they continued. “It makes me so angry seeing you fight about politics, democrats VS republicans, because both parties are f—king you over HARD.

“The fact that your politicians, celebrities and billionaires are being idolized is something I’ll never understand. You guys are being f—ked over hard and you lack basic human rights.”

The question of why Americans aren’t rioting over these working conditions was posed in the title of the thread, and the general consensus was a sad but basic truth.

“We’re tired from working so much,” wrote u/violindogs, only to immediately be backed up by other Americans stressing the point.

The entire comment section of the post continues on like that, but if you’re a working adult in the United States, there’s no new information here, just a reminder of the fact that we’re living in a capitalist dystopia while being told it’s actually paradise.
