A popular conservative Twitter user by the name of Ali Alexander who claims to be a “National Organizer of the Stop the Steal peaceful voter rights protests” is now calling for his followers to defy COVID-19 restrictions by having big Thanksgiving gatherings. Not only that, he called for national marches and for people to refuse to do any of the Black Friday shopping online, but instead bring their possibly COVID-infected bodies into physical stores where people have to work for a living.

“Pass this message on to God-fearing patriots right now,” he concludes before adding the “StopTheSteal” hashtag. This may imply that this “rebel” action is in retaliation for perceived but overwhelmingly non-existence voter fraud in the 2020 election.

Public health experts and political leaders across the U.S. have urged, or in some cases practically begged, people to stay home and avoid travel and large gatherings this Thanksgiving as the pandemic continues its most massive surge yet. Unfortunately, multiple conservative voices are framing this as some kind of liberal attack on the holiday and many individuals have proudly announced their intention to ignore the dire warnings.

Daily deaths from COVID-19 are spiking right along with active cases, reaching nearly 2,000 on Wednesday and recently passing the quarter-million mark. Hospitals from coast to coast are reporting that they’ve neared or reached bed capacity for critical patients and healthcare workers are now regularly breaking down in public Zoom meetings and videos.

Regardless, COVID denialism is in full swing, and Alexander’s call to “rebel” will likely have the intended effect. One Twitter account has been replying to every comment on his post with an invitation to attend a “MAGA Thanksgiving Day Parade And Protest” at Trump Tower in Chicago. Others are jumping in to say they’d already planned to follow items one and three on Alexander’s list, at least.
Meanwhile, people who do believe in science continue to beg their fellow Americans to skip the turkey holiday just this once.
