“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” he wrote. “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey. I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

Page gave credit to the larger trans community for inspiring him and laying the groundwork for him to come out. He also asked for people to be patient as he adjusts and admitted to being afraid of “the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence” often endured by trans and non-binary individuals. He cites the 40 trans people who have been murdered in 2020 and a 40 percent suicide rate among trans adults and condemns those who spread transphobia.

“Enough is enough,” he says. “You aren’t being ‘cancelled,’ you are hurting people. I am one of those people and we won’t be silent in the face of your attacks.

Elliot Page first came out as gay in his Human Rights Campaign “Time to Thrive” speech in 2014 and has identified as queer over the years. In 2018, he announced that he was married to choreographer Emma Portner. Due to the inclusion of they/them pronouns in Page’s letter, there has been speculation that he may be non-binary as well as trans, but the actor has not yet specified.
In the hours after Tuesday’s letter was posted, many fellow celebrities were offering words of encouragement and celebration to Page, including The Good Place star Jameela Jamil and Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus.
