If you were unplugged over the weekend, you might have missed the brouhaha over a New York medic with an OnlyFans account. The New York Post covered it as a news story, but a number of people went online accusing the publication of trying to “shame” her. And now, very online Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y) has entered into the fray for what’s becoming a very interesting conversation encompassing far more than OnlyFans.

The Post raised eyebrows with its Saturday tweet mirroring its headline for the story, “NYC medic helped ‘make ends meet’ with racy OnlyFans side gig.”

The story identified Lauren Caitlyn Kwei as a New York paramedic who “is so cash-strapped from her low-paying ambulance job that she moonlighted by selling online access to erotic photos and videos of herself.”
The story included a tweet from Kwei’s account, which had a link to her OnlyFans account in the bio. The account’s bio now includes “hot paramedic the NY Post tried to destroy” in her bio, along with her Venmo handle and a pinned tweet going to a GoFundMe account to “help Lauren fight for her livelihood.”

Ocasio-Cortez weighed in Sunday night, responding to the Post‘s tweet, stating, “Leave her alone. The actual scandalous headline here is ‘Medics in the United States need two jobs to survive.'” As of Monday afternoon, AOC’s response had over 350,000 likes.

The sentiment was shared by @jasminericegirl, an OnlyFans model who crafted a longer but similar “alternative headline” on Sunday afternoon: “NYC medic is not being paid a sustainable income despite her important role particularly during a pandemic, takes on an additional job and admirably manages both, but really should just be paid more at her current job.”
Her response is also performing well on Twitter, with more than 276,000 likes in just over 24 hours.
