The official Electoral College vote for the next President of the United States is happening today. During most election years, nobody even pays attention to this vote because one of the candidates has already conceded. This year, however, the members of the Electoral College in swing states are reporting violent threats against them, including death threats, if they should complete their procedural task of making the people’s vote official.

According to The Detroit News, the Michigan House and Senate had to close their offices in downtown Lansing, notifying workers and anyone else who might come in that only the Electoral College voters would be allowed in.

The decision was reportedly due to “recommendations from law enforcement” stemming from “credible threats of violence.”

Meanwhile, in Arizona, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs told CNN that she and other electors will be voting from an “undisclosed location” for their safety.
“We’ve seen increasingly escalating sort of rhetoric and threats throughout the last week, and decided to move this for the safety of everyone involved,” she said.
None of this was helped by the fact that violent right-wing agitators, including many Proud Boys, marched through Washington D.C. over the weekend, ending in multiple stabbings and a whole lot of threatening rhetoric. Videos spread of Trump supporters saying that martial law “might be necessary” to overturn the election, following the lead of people like recently-pardoned General Michael Flynn, quickly went viral.

So far, it does not seem like anything of note has happened that could disrupt the process of the Electoral College vote. Michigan’s has gone ahead without further incident. Tensions were also high after state Rep. Gary Eisen, a Republican, hinted that he and others were planning some kind of “event” that would “disrupt” the process.

This may have simply been the efforts by members of the GOP to send unofficial elector votes for Trump to the people who certify these votes, which will accomplish nothing because they’re fake.
Just another five weeks of this, right?
