David Drew Pinsky, more commonly known as “Dr. Drew,” has officially tested positive for COVID-19 after experiencing some alarming symptoms and also after posting a video of himself in a crowded restaurant around Christmas.

Drew had previously dismissed the pandemic as little more than a “press induced panic” and downplayed the illness as no more severe than the common flu, though he apologized for this back in April.

The television personality posted an Instagram video updating people on COVID’s progress through his body just about a week after the one where he was bragging about supporting his local business over what sounded like a whole lot of other voices. Video editor and popular Twitter user Mr. Victor Berger IV captured the irony of this in a cut of Drew’s two videos played back to back.

Drew has suffered a fever and other symptoms from COVID-19 so far, describing it as a “terrible acute febrile illness” that had him fearing that he might have acute lymphocytic leukemia. The symptoms were so bad that getting a positive COVID test almost seemed like a good thing.

“Because I had this terrible acute febrile illness and was testing negative, and if I did not have COVID, I had acute lymphocytic leukemia, which I did not want to have because that’s the only thing that would do what was happening to me,” he said. “So COVID would explain the whole thing nicely and we have some many good treatments now for COVID.”

A photo post on his Instagram reports that Drew’s fever is down and he’s feeling better, though the course of the illness can be very unpredictable. Thankfully for him, Drew can afford the best care, saying he’s under surveillance and thanking three separate doctors for their “superior care and advice.”

If only the now nearly 350,000 dead in the U.S. could have also afforded superior care and advice.

Drew issued a heartfelt apology in April for equating COVID-19 to the flu after it became clear the illness was much more severe and deadly, which at least is better than many Republicans who have not apologized even after catching it themselves.

“My early comments about equating coronavirus with influenza were wrong,” he said. “They were incorrect. I was part of a chorus that was saying that. And we were wrong. And I want to apologize for that. I wish I had gotten it right, but I got it wrong.”

In spite of this, he still elected to go out to a restaurant unmasked around Christmas. We can only hope that he caught it there rather than spreading it himself to those workers we used to call essential.
