New York Post Tells Trump To ‘Give It Up,’ After Endorsing Him Twice

As President Trump continues fighting the results of the election after failing to provide any reasonable evidence of the widespread voter fraud he started claiming took place before votes were even cast, some of his allies have slowly begun turning on him.

Latest among them is the New York Post, a conservative tabloid the president has often supported over the years. The publication endorsed Trump for office in both 2016 and 2020, but now, they’re ready for him to give up the game.

“You have tweeted that, as long as Republicans have ‘courage,’ they can overturn the results and give you four more years in office,” reads a piece from the editorial board published on Sunday. “In other words, you’re cheering for an undemocratic coup.”

The main push behind this change of heart by the NY Post doesn’t seem to have much to do with stabilizing American democracy and acknowledging Joe Biden was easily the winner this year. Rather, they repeatedly express concern that Trump’s focus on the election — the one that he lost — could hurt the chances of Republicans holding onto those final two Senate seats up for grabs in Georgia next month.

“If Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler win, they will prevent Biden from rolling back what you have accomplished. A Republican Senate can pressure Biden against returning to the old, failed Iran deal, can stop him from throwing open our southern border, will prevent him from packing the Supreme Court,” the board writes.

Of course, this plea somewhat hinges on the idea that Trump actually cares about these things, which many would argue he ultimately does not. But in that instance, appealing to his ego regarding his legacy is a smart move, though it’s one that seems unlikely to move Trump deeply enough to get him to chill.

If there’s one thing the whole world knows about Donald Trump, it’s that he absolutely hates to lose, and there has rarely been an instance where he hasn’t been able to buy, grift, or talk his way out of a loss.

But as even the NY Post now points out, his chances of finding a way back into the White House on January 20 are slim to none at this juncture.

“[The election investigation] efforts have found nothing,” the post reads. “Your campaign paid $3 million for a recount in two Wisconsin counties, and you lost by 87 more votes. Georgia did two recounts of the state, each time affirming Biden’s win. These ballots were counted by hand, which alone debunks the claims of a Venezuelan vote-manipulating Kraken conspiracy.”

But as long as those closest to Trump continue encouraging him, there’s no reason to believe he’ll simply go quietly. And his ego doesn’t seem able to let anyone remain close to him that doesn’t indulge his fantasy that he can stay president, somehow, if people just insist upon it.

So we’re left with the ranting and ravings of a failed leader grasping at anything he can as he falls, and this: “Democrats will try to write you off as a one-term aberration and, frankly, you’re helping them do it. The King Lear of Mar-a-Lago, ranting about the corruption of the world.”
