Once again, Doritos is manipulating my emotions. In a commercial from Doritos Mexico, the company used a real Reddit post as inspiration.

The post was about how a son brought his school roommate home because he had nowhere else to go for the holiday.
But the dad realized watching them together that they were clearly in a relationship. He wanted to find some way to let his son know that he loves him and supports him without feeling like he was forcing him to come out.

The commercial captures the spirit of the story, showing the dad noticing all of the little gestures the two make to one another.
Like leaning against each other in the car:

Riding a horse together (which is not very subtle, in my opinion):

And the son casually ordering for his boyfriend, who looks to see if the dad notices:

The dad turns to the message boards, and writes, “I am a 52-year-old divorced father and I need help. My son and his friend are a couple and do not dare to tell me.”
The ad ends with dad and son hugging it out in the kitchen.

The commercial is called The Best Gift and was created by Slap Buenos Aires and directed by Primo Mexico’s Nico Veiga. It’s part of an LGBTQ outreach program called Doritos Rainbow, Out reports.
“We’re really proud of the accomplishments that have been achieved with Doritos Rainbow,” Eduardo Córdoba, marketing director for Doritos Mexico. “We believe the moment is right to show that our commitment extends beyond a proud celebration every June.”
