Trump: “American Patriots Won’t Be Disrespected,” Says He’ll Skip Inauguration

On Wednesday, a mob of Donald Trump supporters broke into the Capitol building as Congress debated over Arizona’s electoral votes, which were won by Joe Biden during the election. The damage to the property and the deaths of four citizens and one cop finally seemed to penetrate the higher offices. Like Twitter.

Donald Trump, who incited his followers and refused to concede, was put in a Twitter time out. Twitter has been building up to this, labeling the president’s tweets with a warning when they veered too far from political reality.

Not long after, a video of Trump was released in which he condemned the people who entered the Capitol, and seemed to concede (though he didn’t say the words).

“We must get on with the business of America,” Trump said. “A new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.”

A number of people predicted that as soon as he has access to his account again, he would be walking it all back.

And that’s true. His first tweet was about all the “patriots” whose voices he supported, a not very well disguised dog whistle to all the people he renounced just yesterday:

And his second tweet was about how he isn’t going to be attending the inauguration on January 20th.

That makes Trump the first president since Andrew Johnson (who was also impeached) not to attend the inauguration of their successor.

Big surprise! It’s not clear if Twitter will take action again if Trump goes too far, but watch that space as the inauguration approaches. Some people think January 6th was just a preview.
