Figuring out the right shampoo to use can be difficult for anyone. We all have different hair types, live in different climates, deal with different sensitivities…but one thing we can all generally agree on is that a good place to start the search is by looking for shampoo that’s actually made for, well, humans.

Quillette editor Jonathan Kay apparently never got that memo.

Over the weekend, Kay tweeted out a photo of his shampoo, alongside the realization that he had been using dog shampoo to wash his hair for “the last few months.”

Kay called the mishap “partly” his own fault before proceeding to tag @ArmandHammer in a complaint that the “for pets” portion of the label is written in smaller font than “soothing oatmeal shampoo.”

And he would have almost had a point, if there wasn’t also a big picture of a dog on the front of the bottle.

There’s also the question of how, exactly, Kay started using shampoo for dogs. Did he actively buy this shampoo for himself at Petco? Does he just indiscriminately grab any shampoo in his bathroom out of convenience?

Kay says it’s the latter, due to his dog getting weekly baths…presumably not given by him, or he would have noticed he was using the same shampoo as his pooch.

People on Twitter were quick to troll Kay, partly because the whole thing is ridiculous, and partly because he’s already pretty controversial

Kay later insisted the whole thing was meant to be a self-deprecating joke and got very upset because Seth Rogen called him stupid.
