Capitalist society has so heavily revolved around work for so long that some people just can’t grasp the idea that actually, many folks are just working to pay their bills, and not out of some deep love of performing labor that disproportionately benefits whoever is higher up the chain than they are.

In many ways, employers have gotten greedier and more exploitative over the decades, paying less while providing fewer benefits, creating toxic work cultures, and still expecting every little peon to go above and beyond. And if they don’t, somehow, they’re the problem.
A recent Twitter exchange that went viral highlighted this issue, showing that older generations still fail to understand the world they have created for the rest of us.

“I have found Millenials [sic] and Zs are very entitled,” wrote @ARou06. “They ignore tasks if they feel like they shouldn’t have to do it. They do minimal work while wanting maximum praise and often claim stress as the reason they fail to perform. They simply don’t have a strong work ethic.”
The tweet prompted a response complaining about how they “watch the clock” and won’t start new tasks at 11:59am if their lunch is at noon. “No initiative, no motivation other than collecting a paycheck.”
The dismissive exchange didn’t go over well with the generations that are tired of getting blamed for everything under the sun after boomers broke the job market for all of us.

And the idea that taking a job for money is somehow morally repugnant is just insane.
In a perfect world, everyone would get to do something they love for money, but that isn’t always possible, and considering we live in a world where basic needs like rent and healthcare can be astronomically expensive, money kind of matters a lot. That’s the society you built, boomers.

Millennials have long been tired of this crap, and Gen Z isn’t putting up with it from the start.

If you want employees that go above and beyond, compensate them accordingly and create work environments that don’t make them stressed and hate their lives. This isn’t rocket science, but maybe the real entitlement is the generation of management that thinks they can keep treating everyone poorly and still get everything they want in return.
