The second impeachment trial of Florida man Donald Trump is underway, and it’s somehow going worse for the defense than expected. After his original legal team for this particular impeachment suddenly quit all at once because Trump was insisting they state that he won the 2020 election, he hired lawyers Bruce Castor David Schoen to pick up the pieces.

He may have been better off doing a little more research into good attorneys, because Castor’s opening arguments have been widely panned as rambling and downright weird. So many people have been comparing his speech to the “Chewbacca defense” from the South Park episode mocking Johnnie Cochran’s closing arguments in the case of O.J. Simpson that Chewbacca began trending on Twitter.

Castor’s fumbling around with topics that barely seem related at all to the case was so bad that even former Trump lawyers are practically at a loss for words.

“There is no argument,” said Alan Dershowitz, who defended Trump during his first impeachment trial, on Newsmax. “I have no idea what he’s doing. I have no idea why he’s saying what he’s saying.”

Others on Twitter compared Castor’s arguments to familiar scenarios from high school in which they were called on to answer a question about a piece of reading they didn’t complete. The only comprehensible point from this guy seemed to be that because the people already voted Trump out, there is no need to convict him on impeachment charges.

“The reason I’m having trouble with the argument is that the American people just spoke, and they just changed administrations. So in the light most favorable to my colleagues on the other side of the aisle here, their system works,” he said. “The people are smart enough, in the light most favorable to them, they’re smart enough to pick a new administration if they don’t like the old one, and they just did.”
