Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is really gunning for the apparently coveted spot of “most hated politician” as she continues to put out statements that everybody hates. In this one, she seemed to call Black Lives Matter flags and the rainbow LGBTQ+ symbols “Hate America Flags” and says she is cosponsoring legislation to have them banned from U.S. embassies.

In a statement released Monday, Greene specifically named the “Black Lives Matter” flag and called supporters of this sentiment a “radical Marxist group” full of “domestic terrorists.” All this is in support of the “Old Glory Only Act,” which would ban U.S. embassies from flying anything but the American flag.

“In the past, rogue members of the State Department flew the flag of the radical Marxist group, Black Lives Matter,” the statement reads. “The domestic terrorists represented by that flag have burned down our cities with the mission of defunding our police. We should NOT be flying a flag of a group who wants to erase our history and bring mass destruction to our country through Communism.”

Fact check: Zero cities have been burned down by Black Lives Matter protesters. Perhaps she is thinking of the climate change-fueled wildfires on the West coast. This is also a great time to remind everybody that “America First” is a slogan that was popularized by the KKK in the 1920s.
Though Greene didn’t evoke the rainbow flag specifically, many are assuming that this bill is at least partially inspired by the flying of this flag over U.S. embassies in recent years in support of the global queer community. However, Greene seems to think that LGBTQ+ folks as well as anti-racist individuals can screw off because they’re not the “majority” in the U.S., which is debatable.

At the same time, she seems to think that the only people in the world are Americans?
“The federal government should only be flying the flag that represents ALL people, the American flag. We need to bring back pride in our country and raise the Star Spangled Banner proudly.”
The bill was originally introduced by Rep. Jeff Duncan, who you might remember as one of the supporters of the Texas lawsuit that sought to overturn the 2020 election in Donald Trump’s favor. This legislation is largely assumed to be in response to new Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s rescinding of a Trump order banning the rainbow flag from flying over U.S. embassies.

Greene may not have a lot of time to help with trying to pass it, however, as Democrats are currently moving to strip her of committee assignments and the movement to expel her from congress entirely grows.
