If you didn’t know that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has a podcast called Verdict with Ted Cruz, you may know it today because a Watchmen writer dunked on him after he alleged that “rabid environmentalists” are the bad guys in movies and shows like Watchmen.

Media Matters researcher Jason Campbell uncovered a video-recorded segment in which Cruz asked, “Have you noticed in how many movies how often rabid environmentalists are the bad guys? Whether it’s Thanos or go to ‘Watchmen.’ The view of the Left is people are a disease.”

That led Lila Byock to jump in on Twitter and contradict Cruz. Specifically, she said, “Hi, @SenTedCruz, Watchmen writer/producer here. Literally what the fuck are you talking about?”

Cruz chose not to go in—unlike his recent, some might say disastrous Twitter battle with Seth Rogen. But Byock wasn’t content with one tweet. She followed up by saying, “Get our name out of your thin mouth.

Then, after Rep. Alexander Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) held a live Instagram session Monday night where she went into horrifying details about the Capitol riot, Byock added, “AOC made news tonight for accusing Ted Cruz of conspiring to kill her, and Ted Cruz made news for whining about tv shows.”

Nerds chimed in, including Cynthia Boaz, who pointed out, “Thanos and Ozymandias are the OPPOSITE of what this simple-minded dipshit is trying to say. They are bad guys BECAUSE they want to kill off people instead of creating more resources. @tedcruz is just mind-bogglingly uncool AND culturally illiterate.”

Greg Pinelo added, “Cruz is soooooo thirsty for attention and cultural relevance, so he continually trolls creators and picks random fights, then gets completely destroyed because he knows precisely dick about whatever show/movie he’s attacking. It’s what he does when he’s not plotting coups.”

Others chimed in just because it was Ted Cruz. Holly Figueroa O’Reilly noted, “The most surprising thing to me about this isn’t that he’s saying batshit crazy things yet again, it’s that he seems to have his own talk show of some sort. Really? People don’t get enough of his punchable face that they have to watch *more* of it?”

Caleb Durham unwittingly started a “which version of Watchmen?” debate by declaring, “Especially wild when the actual villain of Watchmen was a Republican senator who wanted to be president and helped lead a group of white supremacists who conspired against the US.” (Follow that Twitter thread if you want to glaze over no matter how much you like any version in any medium of Watchmen.)

The controversy did have one interesting side effect, though: It brought Seth Rogen back into the melee!

On Tuesday morning, he tweeted, “Let’s not focus on the fact that @tedcruz doesn’t understand movies and focus more on the fact that he inspired a deadly insurrection by perpetuating lies about mass voter fraud.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Cruz hadn’t yet tagged in for another round.
