A university in Norway came up with a clever — and eye-opening — response to a Super Bowl ad that highlights just how far the United States has to go to become “#1.”

During the big game, GM teamed up with Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, and Awkwafina to promote their commitment to coming out with 30 new electric vehicles in the slow trek to replace gas guzzlers and save what we can of the environment.

The premise of the original commercial is that Will and his buddies were angry at Norway for being the leading country in terms of EV adoption, so they were headed that way to tell them off.
The University of Agder came up with their own creative response to the ad, featuring the school’s director panicking over upsetting Ferrell and “the Americans.”

“We have to make a public apology, and we have to get rid of anything else that might make Will envy us in any way. If he gets so annoyed about our electric vehicles, I can’t imagine how he’ll react to all the other stuff,” she says.
What follows is a two-minute quest by university staff to cover up all the things that make Norway a great place to live.
They train a student to lie and say she pays tuition for higher education, take down posters advertising free health care, and desperately try to end a call with an employee going off on a year’s paid maternity leave. If you’re American and not deeply wealthy, it’s as painful to watch as it sounds.

The response video is catching some attention on social media as well.

If all this publicity helps Americans adopt electrical vehicles more quickly — great! But as Norway is showing us, that’s just the tip of the iceberg of all the things we could be doing to make life better for everyone.
