Popular fitness company CrossFit has finally disavowed one of its biggest and most controversial fans, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, for her role in inciting the assault on the Capitol and generally being terrible. The new congresswoman has been a dedicated proponent of the workout method since before her political days, back when she co-owned a gym and was cheating on her husband with tantric sex gurus.

Although CrossFit has many fans among the political right, they have finally released a statement making their views on Greene clear.

“CrossFit supports respectful fact-based political dialogue to address our common challenges, and we strongly oppose the loathsome and dangerous lies attributed to Ms. Greene,” CrossFit spokesperson Andrew Weinstein told BuzzFeed News.

Weinstein is likely referring to Greene’s support of Trump’s conspiracy theory around the 2020 election he lost and/or her previous support of the QAnon movement, both which fueled the attempted coup on January 6. More recently, Greene has jumped on transphobic fearmongering over trans people being allowed to use public bathrooms safely and letting them play sports in any way that makes sense.

CrossFit was quiet on Greene for a long time, even as she seemed to use the brand to help promote her political goals, doing the company’s workouts in videos spread via her government social media accounts. One CrossFit affiliate owner believes this is due to the fact that so many of their fans are among military families and “macho” types who tend to lean conservative, and they didn’t want to anger their cash cow.

“There’s a huge amount of people who are silently fine with how everything is,” said the affiliate owner. “Marjorie Taylor Greene? Fine. We’ll just ignore her and hold our nose.”

At the same time, the previous CEO of CrossFit had to resign last year after making comments stating that the company would not be mourning for police victim George Floyd and spouting conspiracy theories about Floyd and the coronavirus.

“Can you tell me why I should mourn for him?” said Greg Glassman on a company Zoom call. “Other than that it’s the white thing to do — other than that, give me another reason.”

This kind of attitude has been widely associated with the political right in the U.S. Since then, CrossFit has gotten a new CEO and tried to rehabilitate its image following boycotts. However, neither the new boss nor the new VP for culture and inclusion would speak directly to BuzzFeed on the issue of Rep. Greene.
