US Conservative Pundits Suddenly Really Defensive Of The British Monarchy

As you’ve likely heard already regardless of whether you care about the British royals or not, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry did an interview with Oprah Winfrey on why they left the royal family behind. Markle even opened up about how the situation caused her to become suicidal but couldn’t seek help because it would make the family look bad.

“I didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she said. “I was ashamed to admit it to Harry, but I knew if I didn’t say it, I would do it. I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. It was clear, it was real, it was frightening, and it was a constant thought.”

She also spoke on how the royal family was concerned about how dark her baby’s skin would be and other forms of pervasive racism. This and the constant media criticism drove their decision to leave the family and try to have some semblance of a normal life.

This interview has a number of conservative pundits in the U.S. suddenly very passionate about and defensive of the royal family, claiming that Meghan and Harry are being too mean to the remnants of the British monarchy.

“Imagine being Prince Philip: fighting Nazis, helping preside over the UK during the Cold War and the economic struggles of the 1970s, and now watching your spoiled grandson basically call the institution to which you have silently devoted your life a vile repository of bigotry,” tweeted Ben Shapiro.

Others like Megyn Kelly seemed to suddenly understand what the term “privilege” means.

People on Twitter were especially unhappy with Kelly’s attacks on Oprah, accusing her of doing a poor job as interviewer and offering “advice” to the media veteran.

“Oprah stayed too broad-I wanted more: ‘who?…Be specific…what exactly did they say? Who was jealous of M after Australia? How did u know that? What do you mean ur family hasn’t ‘educated themselves’ the way u have? They’re racists? WHO?'” Kelly wrote. “Eventually they’d have to get specific.”

This got left-leaning Twitter to accusing Kelly of hypocrisy considering how easy she’s been on her own interviewees when their own politics have happened to match hers.

Newsmax correspondent Emerald Robinson, on the other hand, took the time to broadcast that she doesn’t understand how racism operates (not to mention irony).

As is often the case, it’s not easy being a Black woman existing in the human world today.
