If you have never heard of Michael Che, he is the guy who sits next to Colin Jost during Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. As one of the head writers, Che has a lot of influence on the show’s humor, but the fact that the show is on basic cable definitely holds him back.

On his Instagram, Che really pushes the envelope, by which I mean he can be a bit of an a–hole. Anyone who knows him knows this, but a whole lot more people got introduced to Che’s sensibilities this week when he started “joking” about Simone Biles, the Olympic gymnast who pulled out of the competition when she began to experience in-air confusion called ‘the twisties’ that could lead to a serious accident or death.

Biles received a lot of support from people, as well as a lot of criticism, and Che clearly didn’t like that someone else was getting so much attention. First, he posted how he wanted to make fun of her “so bad” and that he had a bunch of jokes in his head to share during his next set:
Then he started sharing the jokes sent to him by his followers, one of which referenced Larry Nassar, the man who assaulted Biles and countless other teenage gymnasts:
He also shared one about how “Black don’t crack.”
Che got what he wanted—a whole lot of attention. People were disgusted with his need to post assault jokes and drag down Biles. A few tried to get SNL and HBO, where Che has his own special, to sever ties with him, which they almost certainly won’t do:

Che deleted his Instagram stories and posted on his timeline that he had been “hacked,” but even the tone of this post is pretty sarcastic and to my mind, also a “joke.”
And a lot of other people think he’s just lying as well, or wants us all to know he’s lying at the very minimum:
The man is kind of a troll, and his behavior won’t stop. Unfortunately, there is a whole world of comedy trolls who make money off their audience of edgelords, and that’s the direction Che is heading. Even if he lost his cushy SNL job, he could still tour for fans who think rape jokes are the cutting edge of comedy. It’s a dark world out there in the land of clowns.
