Fed-Up Citizens Secure Alleged Car Thief To Utility Pole With A Ton Of Cling Wrap

A number of residents in Villa Alemana, Chile decided to deal with an alleged serial car thief themselves by cling-wrapping him to a utility pole after he was caught trying to do it again. Video of the aftermath landed on Reddit showing an individual tightly secured in an entire cling wrap cocoon and claiming that he had previously harmed a local elderly man.

According to Argentinian news organization La Nación, the man in the cling wrap was caught and wrapped on Friday after neighbors intervened in his attempt to steal another car. Police eventually arrived and cut him loose before handcuffing him and finding out that he had an extensive rap sheet in the auto theft arena.

“The authorities indicated that before the arrest the individual had injured an elderly adult in the area,” the English translation of the article reads. “They also confirmed that the detainee has a large police record for similar events.”

This type of thing is apparently not uncommon in Chile, where incidents involving repeat public nuisances and cling wrap pop up regularly. In 2014, a 32-year-old man got the cocoon treatment for attempting to rob an elderly man at knifepoint, only this time they took his clothes first.

“Crowds gathered round as 32-year-old Barrera had his clothes torn off and his underpants pulled down, before he was wrapped in clingfilm during the incident in the Chilean capital Santiago,” the Daily Mail reported.

Something similar happened to a young man in Vietnam who tried to skip out on his tattoo parlor bill in January. He was cling-wrapped shirtless to a tree in freezing temperatures with a sign hung on him that read “I hate paying for tattoos.”

It was the tattoo shop owner who eventually took pity on the young man, forgave him, and cut him loose.

Back on Reddit, commenters are loving the idea of a Spider-Man approach to dealing with thievery, noting that in this case, the man was facing the pole as he was strapped to it, so yes, he was able to breathe.

“Going to be one helluva butterfly in 5 days,” one commenter joked.

Others, however, were rather horrified by the idea.

“I’m claustrophobic, that’s a horrible punishment,” said another Reddit user. “I’d rather catch a beating.”
