The shooting took place at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder. The first officer on the scene was among those killed, a SWAT team eventually swarmed the store, and a suspect was taken into custody alive.

“This is a tragedy and a nightmare for Boulder County,” District Attorney Michael Dougherty told the press. “These were people going about their day, doing their shopping. I promise the victims and the people of the state of Colorado that we will secure justice.”

The story is still unfolding — all we know about the shooter is that he was injured and all we know about the victims is that the police officer who was killed was 51-year-old Eric Talley.

But video and photos taken on and around the scene show the chaos that surrounded the horrifying incident.

And gathering accounts from people who were present or nearby during the shooting are a stark reminder that this sort of thing could happen anywhere in America, at any time.

This is the seventh mass shooting in the United States in the past week, starting with the Atlanta spa shooting spree. Between all those incidents, 20 victims have died, and at least that many were injured.
