The Academy Awards may have been the big event of the weekend, but eyes still always seem to be on social media during these sorts of things. Watching other people’s commentaries on award shows is often just as amusing than the shows themselves—if not far more.

But of all the social media coverage that could have come from Oscars night, a viral tweet from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was one of the more unexpected results.
The 70-year-old New Yorker shared a photo of himself sitting disconcertingly close to the television while drinking a beer, alongside this note:

“Excited to be watching the Oscars with an ice cold plant-based beer. Thanks Joe Biden.”
At first glance, it might look as though Schumer simply used predictive text to string together unrelated words. But according to some commenters replying to confused readers, Schumer was likely taking a swing at former Trump advisor Larry Kudlow, who went on a rant against Biden Friday night that made even less sense than Schumer’s tweet.

“Get this, America has to stop eating meat, stop eating poultry and fish, seafood, eggs, dairy, and animal-based fats,” he said. “You can throw back a plant-based beer with your grilled Brussels sprouts and wave your American flag.”
Kudlow was responding to Biden’s climate plan, which some conservatives are already claiming is going to force Americans to cut down on meat consumption by massive quantities, as they spread misinformation about what Biden’s plan actually entails like wildfire.
Of course, the catch here is that beer…isn’t made from meat.

Republicans eager to dunk on a Democrat, any Democrat, swarmed Schumer’s mentions to mock him for calling the beer plant-based, not even realizing that what they were ultimately doing was mocking one of their own alongside him.

Has Chuck never watched TV before? Who watches a whole show in a hard wooden chair? Is there a beer made from steak that I don’t know about? Last time I checked almost every beer was made from barley malt, water, hops & yeast.

Others complained that the photo looked “staged,” but, well, duh. Hate to break it to you, but generally when someone posts a picture to social media, especially to make a joke, at the very least, they ask someone to take the picture and pose for it.
Let the man enjoy his plant-based beer!
