Cop’s TikTok Differentiates Between Taser And Gun, Tells Other Officers “Not Everybody’s A Threat”

Officer Kim Potter’s claim that she meant to shoot Daunte Wright with a taser but somehow accidentally grabbed her gun instead hasn’t gone over well with anyone—apparently including other police officers.

The former Minnesota police officer killed 20-year-old Wright earlier this month during a traffic stop. In the bodycam footage, she can be heard yelling “Taser!” before taking the shot, but that hasn’t been enough to convince most people that she actually meant to shoot a taser, considering the many differences between the two and the fact that Potter had been on the force for 26 years.

One officer who goes by the name of Brian B on TikTok agreed with the skepticism and made a video comparing the two weapons.

First, Brian held a black taser up before putting it in its holster, on the non-dominant side of his body. His gun then went to his dominant side, and slightly lower down.

“Huge weight difference, guys,” he said. “I don’t understand how we can mistake a taser for a gun or a gun for a taser.

“If you’re in the heat of the moment and you do something like that, you shouldn’t be doing this job. Because nobody [dislikes] a bad cop more than a good cop, I can tell you that straight up. I’m not gonna put my life on the line to try and, you know, fix your stupidity and deal with restoring the peace with my public that I serve just because of your stupid actions.”

Brian also added a suggestion that more police officers should abide by.

“Ninety-nine percent of our job is communication. You don’t gotta be quick to pull out a gun or a taser on somebody and think everybody’s a threat,” he said. “Not everybody’s a threat. Try talking to them, get to know the people.”

Brian’s TikTok has since been deleted, but commenters who saw the video on Twitter are appreciative of him taking a stance and sharing his perspective as a cop on the unlikely defense strategy.

A follow-up video from Brian before his videos disappeared explained that he’s been a police officer for 12 years and has been in a number of high-stress situations, so his commentary is coming from a place of experience.
