Page publicly came out as trans last December, sharing that he felt lucky “to have arrived at this place in my life.” Despite the constant opposition that trans people face in the United States, Page also received an outpouring of support from fans and friends alike upon acknowledging and accepting his authentic self.

In an interview with Thomas Page McBee for Vanity Fair, Page expanded on that experience, and how his life has changed for the better following coming out.
“The most significant difference is that I’m really able to just exist,” he said. “For the first time in, I don’t even know how long, [I am] really just being able to sit by myself, be on my own, be productive, and be creative. It’s such an oversimplification to say it this way, but I’m comfortable.”
Anxiety that comes from constantly questioning one’s identity in quiet moments is something many members of the LGBTQ community have experienced and talking about, in regards to the time before coming out to themselves and to others.
Page shared that he felt so much “energy and time [was] going towards feeling uncomfortable, constantly checking my body, just feeling unwell,” and with accepting himself for who he is, that uneasiness has abated.

Of course, he’s still surrounded by a world that hasn’t come to fully accept the gender spectrum or the idea of being trans. In a recent interview with Time, he notes that even for those close to him who mean well, “it’s going to be an adjustment.”
But his activism in support of trans teens, pushing back against the wave of anti-trans legislation across the country, and simply being himself in front of an audience that picks everything about public figures apart is already serving as encouragement for others to live their own authentic lives — whatever that means to them.
