Representative Maxine Waters reached the limit of her patience with Rep. Jim Jordan after he refused to stop demanding that Dr. Anthony Fauci give him a magic number for when “we get our liberties back,” by which he meant when it would be safe to go back to “normal” after the pandemic.

Committee chairman Rep. James Clyburn tried to intervene in this sideshow to give Jordan a number for when things could go back to pre-pandemic procedures in congress, but Jordan refused to accept this and the meeting devolved into chaos.

Fauci, of course, didn’t want to give Jordan a magic number that the congressman could turn into a sound bite to use against him later because things can rapidly change in a pandemic involving a novel virus, especially as new strains may impact the effectiveness of the vaccine.

As Clyburn tried to retake control of the meeting and everybody started shouting, Waters’ voice rang out to express her displeasure with Jordan’s lack of respect. “You need to respect the chair and shut your mouth,” she said.

Remarkably, Jordan did indeed shut his mouth after Waters told him to, and order seemed to be restored to the meeting.

Jordan has made a name for himself as one of the most annoying guys in every hearing and meeting that he and Fauci have been in together, frequently issuing unreasonable demands for hard numbers that may or may not exist and yelling about pandemic restrictions and freedoms.

Fauci has occasionally expressed his exasperation with this sideshow that seems to be little more than a way for Jordan to get approval from his anti-masker and COVID-denier constituents at the expense of the rest of them.

Jordan also faces multiple accusations of knowingly allowing sexual abuse by a wrestling coach he was assisting to continue rather than doing anything to report or stop the abuser.

In this second year of the pandemic and as case numbers are once again on the rise across the country, threatening a “fourth wave,” many are fed up with Jordan and other Republicans acting like masks and social distancing requirements are freedom-stranglers. Waters’ admonishment, therefore, comes as a breath of fresh air.
