Following a number of recent high-profile police killings and other cases of police brutality, including the killing of Daunte Wright just a half-hour from where Derek Chauvin is on trial for murder, one Twitter user asked his followers for their “most ridiculous” interactions with officers.

Professor Wilfred Reilly was specifically interested to see how often the worst cases of police absurdity happened to people of color, women, and other marginalized peoples.

“Twitter followers: what was your most ridiculous experience with the police – i.e. reasons given for being pulled over, stopped, arrested, etc?” he asked. “I want to see if these vary across race/sex/etc lines, and if so how much they do.”
The results were about what you would expect, with people of color reporting some of the worst harassment and brutality and women reporting sexual harassment from cops. Plenty of white men had stories to tell as well, especially if they were caught with any visible indicators that they were poor. Some of the stories are weird and hilarious, others are simply frightening.

One pattern we can’t help but notice suggests that police really need to be careful when they’re entering people’s plates into the computer so they don’t end up thinking the vehicle has been stolen. Others simply need to get off the power trip they’re clearly on or get different jobs.
Here are some of the best/worst examples:
