Reporters on the scene were approaching the protestors for their perspective, and CNN’s Sara Sidner met the man who has become the Internet’s hero. The man was holding a can of soup as Sidner spoke with him, which he brought up quickly.

“I’ve been here all four nights,” he told Sidner. “I’m just standing here today with soup for my family. And we’re just watching all of this unfold. It’s very unfortunate.”

As he said the soup was for his family, the man winked directly into the camera.

Sidner pressed him, asking if the soup really was for his family or if he planned to use it as a weapon against the police.

“Like I say, it’s for my family,” he answered.

If you don’t remember, during Black Lives Matter protests in 2020 sparked by the murder of George Floyd, former president Donald Trump made some bizarre claims about “anarchists” using soup as weaponry.

“And then they have cans of soup,” he told reporters at the time. “Soup. And they throw the cans of soup. That’s better than a brick because you can’t throw a brick; it’s too heavy. But a can of soup, you can really put some power into that, right? ….And then, when they get caught, they say, ‘No, this is soup for my family.’”

“They’re so innocent. ‘This is soup for my family.’ It’s incredible. And you have people coming over with bags of soup — big bags of soup. And they lay it on the ground, and the anarchists take it and they start throwing it at our cops, at our police. And if it hits you, that’s worse than a brick because that’s got force. It’s the perfect size. It’s, like, made perfect.”

Hey, thanks for the great tip, man.
