There’s nothing new about Republicans waxing on about American jobs getting shifted overseas, but Senator Steve Daines of Montana apparently isn’t messing around about it.

During a trip to the U.S./Mexico border in Texas, the Montana lawmaker spent some time blasting the influx of migrants crossing into the country, including blaming them for taking Border Patrol’s attention away from crime, allowing more drugs to be imported to the U.S.

In fact, Daines apparently longs for the days when drugs were a more U.S.-based business.
“Twenty years ago in Montana, meth was homemade,” he said. “It was homegrown. And you purity levels less than 30%. Today the meth that is getting into Montana is Mexican cartel.”
Getting nostalgic for “meth maker” being a readily available job in Montana is a weird way to approach crime at the border, and even if he ultimately was just trying to claim that Mexican cartel meth is more dangerous than Montana meth, there had to have been a better way to do it.

But the sentiment was too absurd for Twitter to let it pass, opting instead to rag on Daines for the absurdity.

Daines is among those Republican senators blaming President Biden for a “border crisis,” so reaching with his meth complaints isn’t too surprising.
But he should probably find a better way of saying it that doesn’t sound like he’s advocating for meth to be primarily American made like the good ole days.
