After spending the entirety of the Trump administration disregarding the inhumane treatment of migrants at the U.S./Mexico border, Republican politicians are suddenly trying to use the same group of people to push their own agenda in the hopes that it hurts President Biden.

Ted Cruz has been leading the charge when it comes to suddenly claiming there’s a brand new crisis at the border that suddenly started when Biden took office, even rounding up a group of his fellow Republican senators to go down to the border for some photo ops last weekend.

On Sunday, Cruz posted a video in which he tried to record footage of migrants being kept in a room at a facility in Donna, Texas. But, he says, a Biden “political operative” was sent to block the cameras.
“You’re instructed to ask us to not have any pictures taken here because the political leadership at DHS does not want the American people to know it,” Cruz claims, with “it” potentially referring to the conditions at the facility.
“Please respect the rules and give the people dignity and respect,” the woman responds. “That’s all we ask.”
The thing is—a number of Democrats are still expressing concern over conditions at the border, too. It’s difficult to expect every issue leftover from the past four years to resolve within two months, especially in the middle of a pandemic, but many believe we should be doing better.

But people aren’t convinced that’s actually what Cruz wants.
Despite doing his best imitation of a human and pretending to actually care about the migrants at the facility, the Texas senator and his allies are actually pushing for a return to harsher immigration policies, in response to the Biden administration overturning Trump-era policies that were unpopular with the Democratic base.
Because of this, and because of the fact that no images of children in cages or stories about people struggling to get to the United States for a chance at a better life seemed to move these same people during the Trump administration, folks aren’t exactly taking Cruz at face value when he suddenly acts as if he cares.

Trump supporters are working overtime trying to defend Cruz by saying there was no crisis in these holding facilities under the last administration, but that’s simply untrue.
And if politicians on either side of the aisle want to use actual human beings to stir up sympathies and push their own agendas, they need to make sure they’re fighting for those people regardless of who’s in power at the time. That shouldn’t be too much to ask.
