Many Americans were confused over the weekend as Europe prepared for the Euro 2020 championship game between England and Italy, with England eyeing its first win of the tournament, hoping to “bring it home” so much that it became a pre-game meme. Unfortunately for England, they were denied once again in a defeat by the Italian team in a game that by itself inspired several memes, mostly about how everyone but England hates England.

After going through overtime due to a tie game, the match was eventually decided in penalty kicks watched with bated breath by the British royal family as well as an Italian couple dressed up as Super Mario and a piece of pizza, whom everyone loved. After Italy came out on top, it was time for a new round of “it’s coming home” jokes, but this time from those who were rooting from the opposing team to England.

The results from one of the world’s most popular sports caused the memes and jokes to spill out onto everyone’s timeline regardless of whether they cared at all about soccer—or football as it’s known to the rest of the globe. However, one thing Americans can always understand is making fun of the British, and it’s even more enjoyable when everyone else is doing it, too.
