Even though we’ve all been waiting for new guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control now that a good chunk of the American population has been vaccinated, yesterday’s announcement that they were no longer recommending that people who have been vaccinated wear masks indoors in most scenarios came as a surprise.

Yes, the science tracks. In theory, this guideline makes perfect sense. In actuality, it’s going to mean vaccinated folks and anti-maskers are going to be co-mingling with the rest of the population who are still waiting to get vaccinated, with no way to tell the difference between the two.

The news has made a lot of people nervous that we’re going to end up seeing another nationwide spike in COVID cases when we’re so close to actually getting things under control because there is simply no way anti-maskers/anti-vaxxers abide by this honor system.
But even on a more primal level, a trustworthy government agency suddenly dropping that we don’t have to wear masks anymore after a year of pandemic life was something a lot of folks weren’t emotionally prepared to hear.
It’s a big change after all this time spent being hypervigilant, and as much as we all want to get back to normal, it feels strange to think that time may actually be here.
So Twitter coped with this whiplash of emotions and anxieties by throwing out jokes surrounding the CDC, the idea of no longer masking and isolating, and wtf our lives are about to look like after surviving a pandemic.
