DC fans have long speculated as to who would be cast as Batgirl in the live-action films, something that only ramped up after the upcoming movie was officially announced. And while most of the names thrown around were white, often red-haired young women, the casting is finally here—and Barbara Gordon is going to be Afro-Latina.

Not much is known about the role or the film, although folks have wondered about some level of continuity between it and The Batman. In the upcoming Robert Pattinson film, Commissioner Gordon—Barbara aka Batgirl’s father—is played by Jeffrey Wright, who is Black.

His casting initially sparked some curiosity as to whether the role of Batgirl would eventually be filled by a Black actress, but the continuity from one DC film to another has always been hit and miss.

The casting of the In the Heights actress was largely met with enthusiasm, especially from fans of 2020’s Birds of Prey.

But that hasn’t stopped the fanboy haters from coming out of the shadows to throw around racist garbage under the guise of “comic book accuracy.”

Maybe one day these people will learn that not quite everything on the planet caters to them and that casting actors who don’t look exactly like the comic book character brought to life is actually pretty normal, but until then, stay mad guys. The rest of us are going to enjoy the heck out of this movie.
