Mel Gibson has courted enough controversy for a lifetime, especially considering how much of it came before social media as we currently know it.

But it apparently hasn’t been enough for him, as the Passion of the Christ director was recently caught saluting former president Donald Trump at a UFC match.
Cameras were on Trump as he walked through the crowd with his security. And in the background of one short clip was Gibson, offering up a military salute as the twice-impeached president walked by.

Trump has famously few notable supporters in Hollywood, despite how much time he spent rubbing elbows with celebrities prior to running for president (or, more likely, because of it). But to see Gibson might have joined the likes of Kirstie Alley, Kevin Sorbo, and Kid Rock doesn’t seem to surprise anyone.
Sure enough, Snopes did its own research and confirmed that the man in question really was Gibson, and people on the internet had a lot to say about it.

Gibson has been living proof that there is no such thing as the “cancel culture” conservatives insist is destroying America — at least not for rich white male celebrities, who are usually the ones complaining about getting “canceled.” Despite multiple instances of drunken antisemitic rants, racist comments, homophobic remarks, and allegations of abuse, Gibson has continued making high grossing movies and be largely embraced by his peers. At this point, a little salute at a former president accused of egging on an insurrection is unlikely to change that one bit.
