To the dismay of millions of Americans still behind on rent after being unable to work during the pandemic because they needed to stay alive, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the federal eviction moratorium must end and can only exist if it’s passed by congress. This, of course, is highly unlikely due to the impossibility of passing anything in the Senate thanks to Republicans and the filibuster.

Tenants, legal experts, and economists everywhere are issuing dire warnings that this ruling in the middle of a pandemic that did not end and is instead surging once again will spell disaster for the entire nation. Mass evictions are now expected that will swell the already massive ranks of the U.S. homeless and could be the final straw that causes the expected housing crash that some warn will be worse than the 2008 crisis that sparked the Great Recession.
