If you thought the last once-in-1000-years natural disaster to happen this summer in the U.S. was bad, well, you’re probably already seen some of the photos and videos coming from New Yorkers as they endured both a flood and a tornado watch as the “remnants” of Hurricane Ida bombarded the city. The flooding in particular closed down subways and forced residents to wade through waters above knee level, leaving cars sitting with their lower half obscured and killing at least 14 people in New York and New Jersey, with the effects reaching all the way to Philadelphia.

Rescue workers were out in force saving people stranded in their waterlogged vehicles, in subway cars where they had to stand on the seats to stay safe, and from other dangerous situations. At least one food delivery service worker was also spotted bringing a meal to a customer, leading many to wonder who in their right mind would place a GrubHub order while the streets around their building were actively flooded.

The unprecedented weather forced the city to issue its first-ever flash flood warning — the most severe flood warning that a local government can broadcast — and a state of emergency was declared in the area. Additionally, multiple rare tornadoes were spotted in parts of the city, leaving some with text alerts telling them to take refuge in the basement and attic at the same time.

Many brave and/or foolish individuals took the time to record images of what is being called a historic or thousand-year flood but will absolutely happen again thanks to climate change and the failure of the nation’s leaders to stop or adequately prepare for climate change. This is just a sampling of the jaw-dropping photos and videos that came out of the two cities Wednesday night:
