Carrie Underwood fans have been left wondering if the singer is an anti-masker after discovering she liked a recent tweet showing right-wing commentator Matt Walsh speaking out against mask mandates in schools.

Walsh is one of many anti-science people around the country who has showed up at some school board meeting, insisting that having children wear masks as we continue to try to get the pandemic under control amounts to “child abuse.”

“You have decided to require our children to go to school every day all day wearing muzzles like rabid dogs,” he said.

Walsh eventually tweeted out a video of his speech, and that’s the tweet Underwood’s account quietly liked, leaving pro-science fans stunned.

The backlash was so strong that the “Before He Cheats” singer was trending on Twitter Tuesday, though not strong enough, apparently, to prompt Underwood to actually comment.

Finding out one of your faves might be contributing to the seemingly endless pandemic we’ve found ourselves in by denying safety precautions is a crushing blow for anyone who hasn’t fallen victim to COVID conspiracy theories, but that hasn’t stopped people from going hard with the jokes, alongside the criticisms.

Some people have pointed out that Underwood has shared pictures of herself over the past year wearing a mask, and doesn’t seem against it in those instances, ultimately giving some of her fans hope that liking that tweet was somehow just a misunderstanding. But with tensions running high across the country thanks to anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers making the last year and a half hell for the rest of the population, it’s no surprise that people are assuming the worst.
