The incident occurred at the Union Square station in New York City on Wednesday afternoon. It’s unclear how, but a man in a wheelchair somehow wound up in the center of the tracks, chair and all, and was unable to get back out on his own.

As bystanders wait at the edge to help, one man jumps off the platform to bring the man back up. The automated voice announcing that the train is approaching the station and passengers should step away from the platform edge plays overhead.

The fallen man initially appears to jerk away and try to stand up on his own until the helper lifts his wheelchair up onto the platform first. Once that’s taken care of, another New Yorker reaches down to help the man while the guy who jumped down gives him a boost, and is then helped back up himself by yet another bystander.

After both men make it safely back onto the platform, the camera pans to the other end of the station, where a train can be heard, and eventually seen, making its way towards them.

Details surrounding the fast-paced rescue are minimal, but the New York Post reports that police said the man who fell was taken to Bellevue hospital and is stable.

The man who jumped down to rescue him hasn’t been identified, but he has received applause for his good deed on Twitter as the video circulates.

In the past year, subway riders in NYC have faced a string of attacks where people were pushed off the platform on purpose and often unprovoked. While there’s currently no indication of foul play in this particular incident, past events have possibly put New Yorkers more on edge and ready to react in such a harrowing situation.
