A professional communications strategist for the political right in the U.S. became one of Twitter’s “main characters” for the day when she tweeted out to her nearly 50,000 followers that she burns her child’s Pokemon cars when he doesn’t eat enough. Liz Mair, who describes herself as the nation’s “leading right-of-center online communications operative” and who has worked with Republicans like Rand Paul and Rick Perry, soon found herself on the end of a whole lot of accusations of psychological child abuse.

“I have resorted to burning PokĂ©mon cards as a punishment when my kid doesn’t do basic stuff he has to do,” she tweeted, and if you think that’s bad, wait until you read exactly what that “basic stuff” refers to.

“The basic stuff is eating,” she said. “He comes home without having eaten any of his lunch? Card burnt. He doesn’t eat enough dinner? Card burnt. Bear in mind my kid is about 4’6” tall at age 7 and yet weighs less than 55 pounds. He needs to put some weight on, specifically muscle).”

Young children not eating enough is a common problem, but today’s child development experts have emphasized that punishing children for not eating is not the way to go as any kind of punishment around this issue can lead to long-term damage in the kid’s relationship with food. This can result in eating disorders — the most deadly form of mental illness known to humanity by a wide margin.

At the same time, they warn against destroying a child’s things as punishment for any behavior and many consider this to be a form of physical abuse. Doing this because a kid “doesn’t eat enough dinner” is a combination that many feel is an utter disaster.

In response to the intense backlash, Mair has seemingly attempted to claim that she was “trolling” people because she was bored, retweeting her own tweet from a bit before she allegedly joked about committing possible child abuse to her tens of thousands of followers.

“This website is getting to be really boring,” the tweet reads. “I’m starting to consider tweeting deliberately crazy and offensive stuff just to try to spice it up again.”

She also retweeted someone who judged Mair to be a troll in this case.

If you believe Mair is telling the truth, and nobody is saying that you should, the best-case scenario here is that this woman who claims to be the best comms strategist in the whole country used her young child for a bit of “trolling,” deliberately leading perhaps millions of people to believe she’s abusing her kid. Trolling is not considered to be a good look for anyone’s professional social media account, particularly when it’s so reckless and pointless.

Not only will she probably be hearing from CPS pretty soon, her fans who didn’t know she was “trolling” could come to believe that burning a kid’s possessions for the crime of not wanting to eat enough of what is probably bad cooking is a good idea. Others have pointed out that her child will probably not appreciate learning about being used in this way when he gets old enough to understand the internet.

In general, if the replies and quote tweets are any indication of a tweet’s success, Mair may want to revisit some of her communications training or just rethink her life.
