The same crowd willing to imbibe bleach and swallow livestock dewormer is apparently getting scared of what might be in their salad dressing. The punchlines are writing themselves so well at this point, it’s hard to know what to say. (Is it Hidden Valley, or Hidden VACCINE, amirite?)

Former federal prosecutor Ron Filipkowski tweeted a snippet from an appearance that Flynn recently made on an internet talk show. The show is dedicated to conspiracy theories about COVID-19 and election fraud. Flynn decided, apparently, that it would be a good arena to air his concerns about nefarious actors sneaking the COVID-19 vaccine into his salad dressing.

“Somebody sent me a thing this morning where they’re talking about putting the vaccine into salad dressing. Or salads. Have you seen this? And I’m thinking to myself, this is Bizarro World, right?” Flynn says in the clip.
Michael Flynn—for anyone with the memory of a goldfish—is the disgraced former National Security Advisor to Donald Trump. Flynn resigned after 22 days of service, when reports surfaced that he had lied about his dealings with Russian officials to the FBI. In 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty. He was eventually pardoned by Trump in November of 2020. Since that time, Flynn has thrown his influence behind lies about election fraud, eventually going Full QAnon. He called for a military coup late last year and earlier this year.

By comparison, fabricated nonsense about salad dressing seems almost benign.
But this misinformation has since spread wildly among conservative lunatics and other conspiracy theorists. And if we learned one thing from Donald Trump’s presidency, it’s probably that the virulent spread of misinformation is never really benign.

Multiple fact-checkers, including Mike Rothschild and Snopes, have documented the apparent catalyst for Flynn’s bout of condiment-related paranoia. It’s a pilot study that involves the possibility of growing produce that could someday contain vaccine mRNA, so that freezer storage wouldn’t be necessary.
And thank goodness that Twitter—at its feral, unpredictable best—can help combat misinformation, provide an outlet for frustration, and help us all keep a sense of humor in the face of this aggressive madness.
