Matt Damon has been famous for way too long. He’s been famous for so long, he thought he could share a family story involving his use of a homophobic slur and that it would be warmly received by all.

The quote came from an interview with The Sunday Times, which was intended to promote his new film Stillwater, which is controversial in itself. The film is supposedly based on the life of Amanda Knox, without her approval. Well, you can’t say the film isn’t getting attention now!

During the interview, Damon admitted he just learned that calling someone a f—-t is a slur that’s not appropriate in the year 2021.
“The word that my daughter calls the ‘f-slur for a homosexual’ was commonly used when I was a kid, with a different application,” he said. “I made a joke, months ago, and got a treatise from my daughter…She left the table. I said, ‘Come on, that’s a joke! I say it in the movie Stuck on You!’ She went to her room and wrote a very long, beautiful treatise on how that word is dangerous.”
“I said, ‘I retire the f-slur!’ I understood.”
Um, what? This is not the cute tale he thinks it is, obviously, and it has a whole lot of people wondering why on earth anyone would voluntarily share this information. You’d have to be totally oblivious—and clearly, he is. Also, his daughter is doing a whole lot of heavy lifting, having to write her father a heartfelt letter to get him to retire his beloved slurs. While some people are deeply offended, the overwhelming energy of the tweets and jokes about it is, “Wtf?!”
