A man described as “religious” who was known to talk about God and read the Bible in public has been arrested on charges of murder after the burning remains of three people were found in a dumpster in the outskirts of Fort Worth, Texas. He also reportedly confessed to killing two others in the past, with all five allegedly being part of his desire to turn them into “sacrifices.”

It’s not yet clear who or what the sacrifices were meant to be to, but the details of the story seem to suggest that this man was a Christian or at least something like it. Human sacrifices have been detailed in parts of the Christian Bible.

The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old Jason Alan Thornburg, and he is currently being held on a $1 million bond in the county jail pending his trial. One of the victims was identified as David Lueras due to some tattoos identified on his body, and the other two bodies look to be that of a young woman and a child, but their identities are still a mystery. Thornburg reportedly said he also “sacrificed” his old roommate and his ex-girlfriend in Arizona, burning his former roommate’s body in an arson case that helped link him to the victims found in the Fort Worth dumpster.

In addition to burning the remains, Thornburg dismembered the bodies after cutting his victims’ throats or strangling them, hiding the pieces in trash bags and later plastic tubs that he used to transfer them to the dumpster. He referred to all five of these individuals as “sacrifices,” according to police.

“Thornburg believed that David needed to be sacrificed,” reads the warrant for Thornburg’s arrest. “He sliced David’s throat, and then cut him into pieces in the bathtub. Thornburg initially hid the remains in his room in trash bags before obtaining Rubbermaid type tubs to store them in.”

Police were able to link Thornburg to these crimes thanks to footage that caught a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the scene in Fort Worth, using national databases to look through all the owners of this type of vehicle in the area until the suspect’s name appeared. Due to his relationship to the former roommate, they zeroed in on Thornburg and were able to obtain his GPS location data and motel security footage that caught him loading the plastic tubs into his Jeep.

Officers were not able to provide any motive for these murders in spite of him repeatedly calling his victims “sacrifices.”

“This case was shocking and unsettling, and we knew bringing someone to justice in this case was paramount,” said Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes.
