2021 very well may be the year of school board meetings going viral, and we’re definitely not done yet.

While most of these videos feature anti-maskers screaming about mandates and vaccinations, a recent video from a Lake Travis Independent School District school board meeting in Austin, Texas, takes a slightly different turn.

Now, obviously, the woman featured in the video starts out railing against masks. We’re still in the middle of a pandemic, and science-deniers are going to keep denying science at every opportunity. But it doesn’t take long for her to pivot to something apparently more important to her: anal sex.

“I’m just thankful that y’all don’t have the ability to make a mask mandate,” the woman, identified on social media as Kara Bell, told the board. “Tonight, I was going to talk about the need for a second high school, but I was sidetracked by: ‘For the boys, pussy or the idea of pussy or the idea of idea of pussy.’”

Listening to Bell speak, this sounds like she just started throwing random words out at the board to cause drama. But what she’s actually getting at is a request to censor books in the school. Specifically, in this case, Out of

Bell read a few more out-of-context sentences from the book Out of Darkness, a historical young adult novel addressing racism in 1930s Texas, before moving on to her complaints.

“Not going to lie, I had to google ‘cornhole,’ because I have the game in the back of my yard, but according to Wikipedia, ‘cornhole is a sexual slang vulgarism for anus. The term came into use in the 1910s in the United States. Its verb form, to cornhole, which came into use in the ‘30s, means ‘to have anal sex.’”

At this point, the board tries to dismiss her, but Bell barrels on: “I do not want my children to learn about anal sex in middle school. I have never had anal sex. I don’t want to have anal sex. I don’t want my kids having anal sex. I want you to start focusing on education and not public health.”

Why Bell is equating slang used in a fictional novel presumably either available in a middle school library or taught in an English class with teaching kids “public health” is a bit of a head-scratcher. And look, the debate over censoring books in schools for content like that is too lengthy to dive into here, but suffice it to say that just because a book about racism uses an era-appropriate term for anus doesn’t mean the school is offering up a how-to for teens who might want to do it in the butt.

Surprisingly enough, this isn’t Bell’s first bout of public drama this year.

Back in April, Bell, who was a candidate for the Lake Travis ISD school board herself at the time, was detained by police after refusing to comply with Nordstrom Rack’s mask policy. She insisted that she was a “child of God” and neither had to comply with rules set forth by a privately owned business in which she wanted to shop nor had to listen to police officers once they arrived.

She was ultimately cited for assault against one of the store’s employees.

Apparently, 15 minutes of internet fame weren’t enough for Bell, who now stands to be known as the woman who really, really wants everyone to know she totally has no interest in anal sex. Truly. For real. No cornholing whatsoever for Kara Bell.

But more importantly, she’s disrupting students’ learning and promoting censorship (which some may refer to as, you know, cancel culture) in addition to pushing for a lack of safety among students. So while the video is ultimately pretty hilarious on its own, what it represents in our culture at the moment is anything but(t).
