With the pandemic, a lot of people are thinking a whole lot more about hygiene than they used to, and all the gross little things people do that we used to take for granted—like talking directly into one another’s faces without a mask on. That said, I’m still surprised by how many people are surprised by a viral video of someone reaching into open bread packages and squeezing the bread. Is it disgusting? Yes. Has it never occurred to you that people touch food whenever they can? WHY NOT?!

Of course people are touching the bread! There is no gross thing that folks can do to food that they haven’t done. Don’t doubt it, and buy stuff that is sealed up tight.

To be fair, this TikTok posted by @shawnleighman is still pretty shocking, because it’s one thing to suspect and another to know. In the supermarket, a masked woman pulls bread loaves in and out of their open packaging, stroking and squeezing them to see which is best:
She finally chooses one and starts to walk off but the videographer stops her.
“You gonna buy the rest of them that you touched?” they ask. “You touched the whole thing. You touched all of them. You pulled them out of the bag. Are you going to buy them all?”
“I’m sorry,” the woman responds, then walks away. Guys, I don’t think she’s really sorry. I suspect she has been touching bread a long time and will continue touching bread for many more years to come.
The comments are full of horrified people who are never going to buy this kind of bread again. Perhaps they’re taking stock of just how many things they’ll never be able to buy again because a lot of stuff is out in the open like that:

Even if there weren’t a pandemic, it’s a horrifying thing to do:

Some think more blame should fall on the store for having this kind of packaging, but really, a lot of places do this. Maybe they should all stop?

And some blamed the person filming for not tackling her to the ground or calling the bread police:

If this video bothered you, I have one piece of advice: stay away from the salad bar.
