Ted Cruz is, unfortunately, in the news yet again for doing something unbefitting of a sitting state senator.

After the Texas politician aggressively questioned Ketanji Brown Jackson during her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing to see if she will be the latest to sit on the Supreme Court, he was caught by multiple reporters completely zoning out and allegedly searching his name on Twitter instead.
Cruz’s antics towards Jackson were already under scrutiny. In addition to being what some felt was unnecessarily aggressive in his questioning, the senator also went over his allotted time, causing committee chairman Dick Durbin to repeatedly try to stop him, and earning this painfully accurate quip from Senator Patrick Leahy:

“I know the junior senator from Texas likes to get on television but most of us have been here a long time, trying to follow the rules,” he said.
And when Cruz finally did shut up, he reportedly ceased to show interest in the proceedings, with Congressional reporter Nolan D. McCaskill sharing a picture and writing, “he’s had his head down during all of Coons’ testimony, even as Sasse and Tillis are clearly listening to their Democratic colleague and the nominee before them.”
LA Times reporter Kent Nishimura shared a picture from a different angle, showing Cruz on his phone where he claims “he was searching twitter for his name, this was right after his exchange with Chairman Durbin.”
It’s already apparent to many that Cruz is only interested in whatever can get him attention, and the accusations that his questions for Jackson were only intended to bring up talking points to win him points with his Republican constituents are given a lot more weight if he then immediately turns all his interest towards what people are saying about him on Twitter.
It’s par for the course with Cruz, but that doesn’t make people any less annoyed that this is the state of politics right now.

Why do your job when you can just say some outrageous stuff and trend on Twitter?
